engaging 1st & 3rd gear

All of a sudden the gearbox started giving trouble with engaging 1st and 3rd gear. It began with downshifting from 4th to 3rd and pretty quickly afterward 1st joined the party. Gear only engages when you hold the shifter in place while engaging the clutch. Downshifting from 4th tio 3rd gave sounds that did not sound too sympathic for the synchronizers. I'm gonna check if everything between the shifter and gearbox is still bolted up the right way, but any ideas how this can occur so all of a sudden? Tia,
Alex
