That's old school circuit-fault indication for you! If I am not mistaken, the dash lights go out if the taillights are out. This was common practise prior to modern bulb warning lights. If your dash bulbs don't light up at night, this is an indication that one or more of your tail lights is out.
In my Sonett (about 15 years ago, sigh) I frequently had to remove the rear bulbs and clean up the contacts. also check the ground wires back there, too. I recall wiring of the lights to be a steady problem. This is probably because my car had soooooo many holes in the floor (more hole than floor) that when I drove on wet roads, the interior would fill with a thick, grimy fog of road spray. Ahhh, fond memories.
Do the simple stuff first - check the fuses, check the bulbs, do a visual on everything obvious, and then bust out the trouble light/multimeter. Oh, I also remember removing the rear interior panel to easily expose the rear light sockets. I could then press on the connections with my fingers and test if it was bad connection (bulb would light).
Good luck,
Ludwig
