165-15 was the factory size on the last year of Sonett III ('74.) I think they switched just because 155s were getting hard to find, although the slightly increased weight of the big-bumper cars may have had something to do with it.
Anyway, 165s are slightly easier to find than 155s (neither of them is exactly easy to find, especially if you want a 'performance' tire) but at least they won't rub. Larger sizes get trickier. I have tried 195s (on 6-inch-wide wheels) and the fronts only rub slightly in hard cornering... but at the rear they rub on the fender lip. It looks as if 185s might JUST fit, but so far I haven't wanted to buy a set just to find out!! 185x15 is becoming a somewhat more widely supported size thanks to it being used on some variants of the New MINI, but there still aren't scads of tires out there to choose from...
