Now that you have it out.
You should consider a fuel tank clean, re-line kit.
Like a POR 15 or others sold by the likes of Eastwood.
If you have one pin hole, chances are others are near by.
The kits ( I used POR 15 in 2002 ) clean all the gunk and sludge.
Etch the steel and then fill the pin holes. Not cheap. I think mine was about $50 USD
But worth it for all the trouble you've just gone through.
Or, you could pull the thing more often.
