The headliner is different from most cars' -- it's not attached to some kind of board or shell or liner. The original was just thin foam-backed vinyl (similar to seat upholstery vinyl) glued right onto the fiberglass.
The fiberglass itself is no thicker than the rest of the car -- look at, say, the edge of your engine lid to see how thin it is.
I don't know what you're thinking of mounting to the roof (sound system? DVD player?) but I can't imagine how you'd attach anything that weighed much -- any screws etc. strong enough to hold it would go right through the roof. Flex would be an issue also. Now you know why SAAB attached the rear-glass hinges THROUGH the roof and straight into the roll bar!
If what you want to mount isn't very big, I suppose you could drill into the reinforced front part where the rear-view mirror attaches. There's a metal tube bonded into the fiberglass there and it can take some weight (that's why the mirror and sunvisors are mounted there.)
