Doing it yourself with spray paint is certainly a lot cheaper but requires quite some spare time if you want to do it properly. I did a set for my 96 years ago and they looked very slick afterwards. If you're unlucky and the inside of the wheels are covered with underbodycoating (like mine) you have some scraping and cleaning with solvents ahead of you. The removal of the sealing compound that sticks on the edges is no fun either but if you want smooth surfaces where your tire hugs the rim (and of course you want that) you have no other option than getting everything off. Remove the paint with paint stripper; this way you don't destroy the surface grooves. You'll probably need to apply a few times before all paint is off. The spraying of the silver paint is a peace of cake but afterwards the last tedious but ever so crucial activity has to be done: masking the silver around the parts that must be sprayed black. The use of masking liquid used in model making is very handy for small edges that are difficult to mask with tape. After the spraying of the black and removal of the mask finish with a few layers of clear laquer. If everything has been done properly you will feel very proud.
