Ammeter installation

Got my matching vintage VDO gauges now (off of a '56 Chevy no less!). Was wondering if anyone on the BB has installed an ammeter in their car? I have '68 Sonett V4.
Looking at the wiring diagram, I'm assuming that the ammeter will need to go into the circuit between the starter battery post and the alternator since I can find no other likely junctions/connections. I will unhook the two smaller wires (10 ga.? - both going to the same post as the battery cable) on the starter solenoid, and connect them to a terminal block which I will install on the frame just below the starter. A wire going to the charge side of the ammeter will join them there. The other wire coming from the discharge side of the meter will go to the solenoid post (battery) connection. Is this the right way to do this? Will the ignition idiot light on the dash still work as well?
Thanks for the help.
