I only overlapped mine by 3/4". Just enough to spot weld the two pieces together. Then I carefully ran a full bead to make it look like one piece. The metal bending took me upwards of 4 hours for one piece to get it perfect. As long as the welds are good, it shouldn't hurt the strength of the piece. The overlap will probably even make it stronger.
Make sure you have the door openings braced before you cut anything away in the rockers. The car will bend in half. Mine did. And then your doors won't close. Thankfully I checked before I welded anything back on. You spend an awful lot of time putting jacks in various places and making a thousand measurements when the car bends.
