Unless the person who had the hardened seats put in the heads will tell you that is what they did, your only way of knowing anything about the valve seats is to pull the head. Once you have pulled the head, you will need to remove one of the valves (or compress the spring) to look at the seats. The original seat was part of the head casting with the valve mating surface machined into the casting. The hardened seats I bought from MSS look like steel rings and when the machine shop installed these new seats they cut a new seat hole and press fit the steel ring in and machine it to the profile of the valve. If this has been done to your heads you can see that a ring has been inserted in the head.
If you are not ready to pull the heads, look into posts on these boards (and other vintage Saab sites) for success stories people have had using lead additives in your gas tank. These additives should do the same thing the lead in gas used to do.
