I don't know anything about the Nipp alternator but I did an alternator swap last night. I was going to post something later but a short drive indicated that it took care of my problems so I'll give info now. I called a local shop that did alternator rebuilds themselves to ask about raising the amps on the stock alt. They used to do that but no longer. Instead, over the phone he was able to match it pretty close using demensions from his catalog. It may be the GM alt. Iv'e seen mentioned before. The numbering is a little tricky. Several # refer to the same unit possibly with slightly different mounting position. 7939-11 I believe wii work. The 11 refers to the position of the adjustment bolt hole which he called 11 oclock. More useful might be vehicles that it fit. 88-89 Buick Century, 87-93 Chevy Beretta, 88-90 Chevy Celebrity, 90-93 Chevy Lumina, 87-93 Corsica and Cavalier, 87 Olds Firenza, 88-89 Cutlass ciera, 90-93 Silhouette and 87-88 Cadillac Cimarron.
Details of swap: Fan and pulley from Bosch had to be used with washer to keep fan from hitting housing. Ignore the woodruf key slots, the GM fans only gets torqued on. The mounting base is about 3/16' narrower. I used one thick washer at the back end and the pulleys lined up perfectly. The mounting hole is somewhat bigger so I had to use a bigger bolt and drill out the holes in Saab bracket. The lower edge of the adjusting arm also had to be trimmed with a grinder. The electrical was the easiest. One wire(marked L) from the new plug goes to the red idiot light wire, the other three get taped off. Big red goes to Battery. Remove old reg. and wires. I did have to go with slightly smaller belt.
Produces 100 amps
Cost: $75 for alt, $5 for plug and $11 for new belt.
I can now play my cd player and use turn signals at the same time, though a possible AC unit for this summer was the main reason for the swap.
Hope this helps.
