Craig--glad to be of help. Those vents are very important--the design of the flow-though ventilation is intended to have moving outside air cause the outside vents to create a vacuum, thereby pulling air from the very back of the car, into those vents, up over the wheels and out. if the pathway is obstucted, the windows will often be fogged up, or worse, exhaust gasses that make their way from the tailpipe through the back door gasket may not be adequately purged. The cardboard pieces are therefore pretty important to create the flow-through airway.
Did you know that Jack Ashcraft has a bunch of prefab pieces for the car? I recently did a restoration of the headliner, plus the back piece with the vents. The kit was very useful.
I have two OK-condition vent pieces I can mail you. They are basically small pieces of 1/4 inch wire screen, with aluminum frames that stay in by having small tabs bent back and around. They can be polished and painted I'm guessing, if you want them. For my restoration, I painted the screens flat black, then for the aluminum frames I polished with scotch-brite, then painted with clear enamel. Email me off-line (by clicking my name in the message header), and send me your address to send them.
