Seth:

This is how I do it. Others may do it differently and have additional details that I may miss by accident.

1. disengage your freewheel. You want the car to have "normal" transmission behavior.
2. put the car in 4th gear.
3. Get exposure to the valve covers and remove the valve covers. At this point you should be able to tell which cylinder is going to fire next. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, a circular pattern. Cyl 1 is near the alternator and cyl 2 is right behind it. Cyl 3 is on the driver side front and cyl 4 is behind it on the driver side.
4. Start with cyl 1. While rolling car forward (this will require you to pull it toward you. If it's easier for oyu to pull remove the plugs to reduce the compression) watch the valves on Cyl 4.
5. The exhaust valve is closest to the exhaust pipe (the middle two valves on each side of the car). This valve will begin to close and just befor eit gets fully closed the intake valve will start to open .
6. When the exhaust and intake valves are even with each other you have reached a point where that cylider's (cyl 4 in this case) valves are "rocking."
7. You should be able to verify this by looking at the timing marks and see that they align at top dead center (TDC).
8. The rocker arms on cyl 1 at this point should be easily moved; wiggle them with your fingers. At this point it is a good idea to measure the clearance of the valves and compare them against whatever you have been using. This will tell you if the valves are receding (tighter than the setting, whatever that is) and are due at some point for a valve job.
9. Insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm tip and the valve stem and adjust the rocker arm nut until you feel a little bit of drag on the feeler gauge as you gently slide the feeler gauge back and forth. When you're comfortable with the amount of drag (a little bit) go to next valve on cyl one.
10. Note, you need to know what valve clearance you want. If you want ot maintain stock specs I believe they are intake = 0.014 inches; exhaust = 0.016 inches.
11. repeat the procedure for the other thre cylinders (in the firing order) watching the opposite cylinder: For cyl 1 watch cyl 4; for cyl 3 watch cyl 2; for cyl 4 watch cyl 1; for cyl 2 watch cyl 3.

I hope that helps.
