I love the look of this car too! I saw my first Sonett, which was a V4 from Washington state back in 1981 at a vintage car & bike race. The event was at Westwood track in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia in 1981 or 1982 and I remember that the owner seemed rather tall for that small neat looking car!
Are you serious..lost besides a mini! ...Well I know for sure besides a Four-Tracker. I actually love the minis. I think they have a wheel base of about the same size?
What thinking of from reading your posts, is taking off the enitire body for rust assessment...(What do you think Jim?).
....No, Larry the body is a structural component and until you decide what your restoration/reinforcement plan is I would only look for the rust in the areas I described to you. Then if it is in your plan to do some major work that requires the body to be removed, say in case the risk of being a fire hazard, the frame must be braced to hold it all in alignment. This is something that I am working on at home here. The brace acts like the body and other suspension, gravity, etc. is doing now. Hopfully at the original enginering points.
After reading my posts, it may have read a bit silly, but I just wondered... That brake light at the roll bar is a great idea.
....I bought a unit that flashs faster when the pedal is depressed quickly. Some drivers out there really like you to see the bugs on their bumpers.
My trunk floor is missing! rusted right off... The sections where the side carpets glue aside the foot wells....a three inch hole where the seam connects to the floor.
.... When I bought my first Sonett in 1986 the floor had been replaced with a piece of metal from an oil drum I beleive. It's not a major structural area of the frame, but that three inch (wide?) hole a long the seam where the floor panel piece is sandwiched between the inner and outer rocker panel pieces really is a concern. This is a major structural area!
Upon jacking the car the other day..under the passenger's jack point....A slow cunch!(ouch) and the car lowered instantly.Yes, corrosion I have to jack the car under the A frame bushing area.. Yet the center floor of the car seams solid and the critical areas around the rear axles and suspension mountings seam solid. As I have welded and own a Miller mig, I plan to change the rockers shortly.
...... Larry, never lift the car up on those 30+ year old jack support brackets! lift the car under the front or rear suspension components or under the front engine plate's cross brace taking real care not to lift up on the oil pan, exhaust cross over, battery cable, etc.
Any advice of changing the rockers Jim? Pertaining to keeping the chasis peferfectly aligned... Lastly, the metal that you are welding in are corrugated..correct?
... Give me a call 250-489-3470 and I will send you some info Larry.
