The motor is together after a long and pain filled rebuild.Let my experience serve to warn others of the pit falls that can come your way.
I am still not sure why the first set of gaskets I bought from West of
(they were correct for the motor it turned out) but I could not get them to seal up. Looking back it could be that the bolt holes had too much oil in them to let the heads seat.Anyway I didn't think of it till much later in the rebuild nightmare.I inflicted damage on one of the gaskets on tear down so I ordered a new set from J.C. #210194 Cortec to fit my 1974 Sonett .The new gaskets were cut differently and because the other set leaked ,I (assumed) the new set was correct. I put the motor back together and It leaked water at the outside corners of both heads. On teardown I noticed the gaskets were cut in at the corners and just missed covering the water ports that are in the lower outside corners of the heads and block.
I compaired them to the old gaskets and saw that the bottom corner is cut straight on the old gaskets.
I called J.C. and they could not help me but were more than happy to refund my money ,but I still needed the right gaskets. I Called Cortec and talked to a nice lady who could not help me but she did pass my call up the food chain in The Co.
A few days later one of their engineers called me and we fussed and discussed my trouble and I finally got across to him what was wrong.
He found the right gaskets and hot shipped them to me .They were on my door
step the next day .Thanks! The cortec #200195 and #200196 are the correct gaskets for my 1974 Sonett 1698cc motor.I did call J.C. and let them know
what I found out, which is, the #210194 gasket set is for a 1498cc V4 and will not fit my 1698cc motor.
So ...let my pain be your gain, check, check and check again those head gaskets and do not be a fool like me.Its cost me about two months of grief on my rebuild not to mention the extra money and a lot of hair pulling.
Thanks to everyone for all the help.
Keep it up.
Moon
P.S.
The 1974 Sonett runs like new again, maybe better!
