...My car came with an extra Sonett tranny and Sonett engine. The engine is partially dissassembled. Apparently the original owner had placed many new parts including bearings into the engine, then the engine started smoking so he threw in the new one and pulled off the heads on the old one. If this is true, I have a mint short block. I am breaking out the Marvel Mystery Oil and I will lube the cylinders, then spin the block. If it is good, I will get new hardenned valve seats in the heads and replace the heads. Then I will replace a starter, luber her up and spin her to check compresion.
A boroscope shows the other engine in the car has clean cylinders with cross hatches still visible in the walls. I therefore feel the valves might be leaky. My cylinder pressures are 120 psi in 2, and 107 in another and 90-113 in another depending on the trial. There is no back pressure from the valve cover breather holes. It all implies bad valves, but rings cannot be ruled out.
