The two-stroke engine used in the 96 started out at a nominal 850 cc -- actually 847 cc, I think.
By 1967, though, you might have gotten the model they called the "Shrike," in which the engine displacement was dropped to 820 cc. The reason for that was to get around newly-imposed US emissions laws for that year -- they didn't apply to engines with a displacement less than 50 cubic inches, so to keep the two-stroke engine legal for one more year SAAB lowered its displacement to just below that.
Yes, they were good winter cars and had lots of clever design features for the era. Back then, SAAB really was an aircraft company that also made cars (actually SAAB still is an aircraft company; GM bought the car-making part.) Not surprisingly considering their aeronautical background, they were one of the first companies to give serious consideration to airflow through all parts of the car. That's why your old SAAB has those vents in the engine compartment that allow air taken in through the radiator grille to flow out into the low-pressure area of the wheel wells; it improved circulation of the cooling air through the engine compartment without adding excess drag. The interior ventilation system with its rear parcel shelf vents and "elephant ear" exterior extractors is another example; so is the "bologna slicer" spoiler added above the rear window of the 95 station wagon to help keep the rear window clean.
(What's a "Shrike?" It's a kind of bird that eats beetles. The VW "Beetle" at that time was the most popular economy import.)
