The other day I was driving my Sonett. Suddenly it would not rev above about 2000 rpm. Even under no load, ie in neutral. Below that it was fine. Car is standard with original carb and points. I thought it was fuel so I stripped the carb. The bowl was full of fuel. Interestingly when I removed the gas pipe from the carb, it sprayed gas all over the place. There was pressure in it so I thought the needle and seat must be jammed but they were good. The tiny filter was clear. I blew out the jets. next I checked the points, They were clean and correctly gapped. Generally a points problem can be seen by watch the tachometer in the car but it did not flutter or drop, just stayed at about 2000 rpm.
I always thought I could fix any problem with a simple carb, points and condenser..
Only I have found is a loose wire with a spade connector on it. It cames from the loom by the mechanical fuel pump, next to the oil pressure sender, and goes up the side of the engine reaching to about the fan. It looks like it has not been connected for some time, is to short to reach the carb. I can't find any place to connect it.
Any help will be great appreciated.
