I have done it both ways and disagree that welding is the best way. Jack Ashcraft's unit is not expensive and can be reversed. Welding cannot. There are decent arguments for maintaining freewheel operation if the parts are good, search this and the Antique oops I mean Vintage board for lots of previous experience.
