Relube is a good advice and avoid to have sharp turns on the cable. If you have sharp turns on the cable it works like a spring and you get that jumping needle.
Take care when you remove the cable on the speedometer! The connection is made of plastic and if the cable is old the plastic is hard and snaps very easy. Press the plastic gizmo towards the speedo (there is a spring) and turn nice and eazy.
No UpstateNY Bill, this has nothing to do with ground and such things. It is all mechanic. :-)
