...Rock salt and course salt in a dry environment are great. They are not so hard that they score metal too deeply, and salt has another advantage. Once you are done, you must immediately wash with water. Unlike glass beads and walnut shell, salt will disolve and disappear forever with copious amounts of hot water. (Glass beads and walnut shells require carefull scrubbing and even light sanding to remove the particulate matter). Then you wash the salt blasted wheels with alcohol or ether or brake cleaner, and there is no residue or corrosion at all. All you do is body work imperfections and paint. Another nice thing is that salt is cheap as dirt if you buy it in bulk. It can even be reused 1 or two times before throwing it out. It is not a biohazzard, so it is not illegal or dangerous to place it in the trash. It is also safe to inhale salt dust, unlike walnut and glass bead dust.
I have done this before on other wheels and body parts, so I speak from experience.
