Trouble disconnecting gear shift rod (removing engine)

I'm having some trouble following one of the instructions for removing the engine and hoping to get some clarity or hints. In the service manual, step #18 says, "Remove the front taper pin of the gear shift rod joint by moving the nut over to the opposite end of the pin. The pin can then be removed by means of the nut. Open up the gear shift rod."
So far I've stripped one nut (and had to cut it off) and quite sure I'm about to do the same again because I can't figure out what else to do other than tighten the nut on the formerly bare side of the pin (I think there's a famous Einstein quote on insanity and expecting different results from the same actions that I'm trying to avoid living).
Am I missing the point of "by means of the nut" and "Open up the gear shift rod"?
Thanks in advance,
K
