Eric,
As Glenn said, Sonett II's don't come up for sale very often so you will have to be patient. If that's what you really want, the wait will be worth it.
As far as reliability is concerned, there is no real difference between an early vs. late Sonett III. Differences are, for example, cosmetic (knobs vs. switches on the dash, different style side mirrors, etc.), safety (reinforced doors and 5 mph bumpers), or engine size (1500 with higher compression or 1700 and lower compression), and different carbs (ie. Solex vs. FoMoCo).
The biggest visual difference is the 5 mph bumpers. '70-'72 have the small foam bumpers and '73-'74 have the big ones (very early 73's had small bumpers as they were manufactured in late 72, not sure of the cut off month).
Good luck with your decision,
Bill
