I just ran across the same issue with my 68. I'm currently rebuilding the engine from a 74 parts car and decided to clean up the engine bay while the old engine is out. I had decided to have the clutch master sleeved so that I wouldn't have a recurring problem with leaking brake fluid but then changed my mind when I discovered how similar the piston assembly was to the one from my 73 Datsun pickup. Same bore and length and pushrod fits to piston the same. I was using the line frome the parts car to figure out how to adapt it to the different flare end for the Datun master. I cut off the bubble flare at the master end, removed the fitting(must replace with metric size I believe)and straightened the pipe so I can pull the new fitting back far enough to flare end. If it all works I'll probably have a new line made up. Back to your problem Slyde. I discovered there was a difference between the 2 slave cylinders. The 74 has 3/8-24 inlet threads, which are the same as both ends of the flex line. The 68 flex line threads are the same but there is a 1.25" adapter with 7/16-20 male threads that screw into the slave. A copper washer is all that makes it seal. If your 96 has the same adapter you should be able to remove it and screw the smaller fitting directly into the slave. Back to the conversion. The main reason for the change is plentiful supply of both master cylinders and rebuild parts. There are always new ones on ebay that sometimes go for as little as $16. The other issue is that it can more easily be converted to a remote resevoir. The 68 has a one piece master and I've seen repacement clamp on plastic caps with hose barb for a remote resevoir. Will post if it all works.
