Might work, if you can find ones that fit. I see bronze bushings in all kinds of sizes at the hardware store. They wouldn't have the self-lubricating properties of plastic bushings, so it might be necessary to get in there every now and then and give them a smear of grease. But it has to be a better answer than deteriorated plastic bushings, or NO bushings!
If you give it a try, let us know how it works.
I'm inclined to believe the story about the manual headlights being a safety-motivated choice, especially since the linkage is conceptually a scaled-down version of the landing gear retractor on the Saab 91 Safir airplane, so would have made sense for them to choose. Besides, think how much of a load an electric-motor system would have put on the wimpy little 35-amp alternator in a Sonett!
Still, converting the headlights to electric 'pop' might be an interesting project for someone with an upgraded alternator and a taste for invention. Wonder if a junkyard power-window motor out of a domestic car would be strong enough...?
