Hi,

I added a front sway bar to my '73 Sonett some years ago when the motor was out. It was quite an easy task as I recall. The thing to note is that the holes for where the sway bar passes through the vertical parts of the body are NOT there. Well, sort-of not there. You can actually see an oval area where they're supposed to go throught the body. IIRC, its an area with two thicknesses of steel and you have to cut out one of the thicknesses. You can use a torch to cut this area out, or drill multiple holes and then use a file. The mounting hardware bolts right up once you have these holes and pass the bar through. Seems like there was a Jack Ashcraft article in NINES many years ago that got me to do this modification. IIRC, he made a statement that Sonett III's didn't come with them.

It was a long time ago that I did this mod, and I think the car handles a bit flatter. I haven't done it to my '74 Sonett, as the only time I had the engine out, I didn't have a spare bar from a 95/96. Otherwise, I would have. Seems like I also read that latter 95/96's didn't get them.

Is it that significant a difference?? Probably not. I do recall that Addco made a rear bar for old Saabs for some time. The reports back then were that people didn't like them and they came off pretty quickly.
