After I had bought a set of JP "Cromodora" wheels for my Sonett V4 from Paul Perry (Swedish Auto Factory, Santa Clara, CA,) he told me about using TSP to clean them (they're cast Aluminum). He used it on his alloy wheels, and said it worked great at cleaning the accumulated oxide and crud off. He did say that phosphate actually etches aluminum, and indeed, it says right on the box, not to use TSP on aluminum. Our wheels had been bead-blasted, so, I wasn't worried about etching a "polished" finish. It does work very well at getting the grease and black oxide off, and I'd say, that even if your wheels are polished, you could still use it and a stiff brush to clean the back sides. TSP, btw, is available at any hardware or paint supply - it is used to clean and degrease walls and other surfaces before painting. Another great advantage of TSP is it's cost - it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a bottle of Mcguires, and you can use what's left to clean your kitchen. :-) Try it - you'll like it.
