Heating up past 70MPH

Good morning Sonett Friends. Having a problem with the cooling system on my 74 Sonett 111.
Car runs nice and cool in the middle of the gauge BUT, when I get above 70MPH I run aprox 3 quarters on the temp gauge.
Look under the hood and I find the radiator cap is loose and has deteriorated so bad that there is no seal.
I was told to purchase a new radiator cap with a 13lb pressure raiting from my local auto parts store.
Waht are your thoughts or suggestions.
TIA
Bobby in Tampa
