Just to summarize what was in those posts:
1) get a compression tester- preferably, one that has a screw in mount.
2) remove all 4 spark plugs
3) ground the coil
4) install compression tester in first cylinder
5) crank engine for 10 to 20 sec
6) read and record compression in PSI
7) repeat for remaining cylinders
8) squirt a small amount of oil in the first cylinder
9) repeat procedure (crank, record, go to next one).
Compression should be above 100 PSI and even (within 10 PSI on all four cylinders). If it is lower than that, and rises appreciably after the oil squirt, then your rings are worn. If it is lower than that and stays about the same after the squirt, then its your valves.
If one cylinder is way down and doesn't change with the squirt, it could be a burned valve or maybe a blown head gasket.
Now. One other thing. Pull off your valve covers and see if you find small pieces of hard blackened material floating around. This is common. It's the valve stem seals that have gotten hard and cracked over the years. This causes a puff of blue smoke on start up, and sometimes a puff on acceleration. This is because the oil leaks down the valve stem and burns- a puff of smoke! The fix is easy and can be done with the heads in the car. Or, you can not worry about it too much.
With your plugs out and your valve covers off, its a really nice time to adjust your valves!
Hope this helps.
