The Sonett III uses a bumper on the lower hinge of each Posted by Paul Z [Email] (#481) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Paul Z) on Tue, 30 Dec 2008 11:59:05 In Reply to: Does Sonett III have a door stop?, ThisIsRDG [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 29 Dec 2008 09:38:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
door. The bumper is a dense rubber rectangle clamped to a metal backing plate with flanges on one side. The rubber/metal piece has a slot cut in the center that fits around a flat sliding rod. The rod is fixed to the hinge with a pin. If you open your door and look closely at the lower hinge, you should be able to see the end of the rod and the pin, but you will have to remove the interior wall panel to access the bumper itself.
Once the interior panel is removed, you might want to feel inside on the bottom to see if any of the pieces fell off. Most likely it fell off when you removed the door in the first place. It is possible that the rubber deteriorated and fell off, but the metal backing plate should still be there unless it was purposely removed. It has flanges on one side where the rubber fits into.
I had to rebuild one of my bumpers because the rubber was plain worn out. I used a solid heavy-rubber body mount piece I found and cut a new (correctly sized) bumper from it on the ban saw, then cut a slot in it with drill and exacto-knife, and re-mounted it to the original metal backing plate.
I rebuilt mine just last summer, during a frame-up restoration that included complete disassembly of the doors. My memory isn't exactly spot-on, but I have some doubt that you will be able to remove the flat rod without at least loosening (if not removing) the hinge, but start with removing the wall panel and give it a try.
It should all be reasonably self explanatory once you remove the interior panel. Let me know what you find.
