Posted by The Saab Network (more from The Saab Network) on Thu, 20 Oct 1988 12:00:00 I'm hoping somebody on this list can help out with a problem that thelocal Saab mechanics have been unable to correct. My '81 900S (non-turbo) has a glitch in the alternator/electrical system that's a bitbizarre, though it seems to involve an electrical short somewhere alongthe line. When started, the car will do one of two things: 1)thealternator light will come on, or 2) the tachometer will not come up.(In case #2 the alternator light will remain unlit.) In either case, revving the car up to the 2800-3200 rpm area will sort-of rectify the problem, which is to say that revving will either cause the alternator light to go out or the tach to come up. *But*, the initial thirty seconds or so after revving seems to leave thealternator system under fairly severe strain, meaning basically that it's likely to screech like a motherfucker until you hit third. (But it doesn't always do this; seems to be related to humidity and/or atmospheric temperature, believe it or not. And yes, the belts have been checked, adjusted, etc.) In addition, at the moment the engine is revved and the tach comes up, the fasten seat belt sign and buzzer activate, probably indicating a short somewhere in the electrical system.The two obvious candidates here are the alternator and voltage regulator,but both have checked out o.k. repeatedly. I'm inclined to think thateither: 1) there's a short somewhere up in the dashboard wiring--there'sevidence that somewhere along the line that somebody improperly removedthe dashboard panel, yanking the odometer cable in the process.2) whoever installed the (non-factory) radiomanaged to damage some circuits further up the electrical line.(Looks to me like the suckers used solder on at least one connection.)But I'm not sure if either of these could create the problems I'mhaving. (I do some mechanical work on the car, but I don't know much about the Saab's electrical system.
