Repainting Alloy Wheels [saabnet.com]
Posted by Trionic - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=2 (more from Trionic - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?em=2) on Sat, 18 Sep 2004 18:36:27
Back in 1991 when I bought a new base 900, I also bought some used alloy wheels for it. The wheels where in great shape but the plastic center caps were peeling and scratched. I found that Krylon made a silver spray paint that was a perfect match to the paint on the wheel. Fast forward to 2004. I recently bought a 9-5 Aero and found out that there are no 16' steel wheels (for snow tires) readily available that will fit. I found four Saab Viking Shield wheels on eBay and picked them up. The wheels were in good shape but the center caps were badly blistered. I sanded the caps down to bare plastic with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and let them dry overnight. I then primed, color coated and clear coated the center caps. The results were a PERFECT match to the alloy wheels. If anyone needs to do this, here are the Krylon paint numbers- Metallic Enamel #1401 Bright Silver All Purpose Primer #1318 Gray Crystal Clear Gloss #1301 You only have to wait about 15 minutes between light coats-so you can go from bare plastic to finished cap in less than a day. I would have no problem using these paints to re-spray a chipped wheel as well as the center cap. I have never used the very pricey Wurth alloy wheel paint, but trust me, it can't match any better than the Krylon Bright Silver. ================ To send a response, just hit reply!
