Clutch fork on 1975 99
Posted by Donald Benson (more from Donald Benson) on Tue, 7 Feb 1989 19:44:43
The 1975 model has a slave cylinder which works on the clutch releasebearing through a lever. My lever broke at 150k miles. The Syncros fooledme into thinking I couldn't powershift, so I had it towed home. You aresupposed to remove the radiator and bell housing to replace it, but by filingthe opening in the bell housing about 1/4' on each side, the fork can beslipped in.The failure occured along the edge of a logo cast into the fork. Just likethey taught us in Materials classes! If you are building a high-performanceengine, look for anything which produces a tight-radius corner and grind itto make a larger radius. Does anyone know if this stress concentration occursas much in forgings, or just castings? After fixing my clutch, I tried shifting without the clutch. Yep, it works.Oh well, next time I'll know I can coax the car home without triple-A's help!
