I've experienced both slave and master failures, though at separate times.

My master failure ('86 SPG) was all at once without advance warning. When
depressing the clutch you had just about a second before it re-engaged
itself! Unfortunately, mine failed as I was trying to leave a baseball
game so I was stuck in parking lot traffic. I made it home, but it was
dicey (1st, move 2 feet, neutral, first, neutral, etc).

My slave failure ('84 900) manifested as a clutch pedal engaging nearer
and nearer to the floor, over a long period of time until it would barely
disengage the clutch at all. Pumping the pedal gave minimal improvement.
Changing the slave cylinder requires removing the clutch and I can't
imagine not doing a new clutch assembly while you're in there.
