The early engines had a double row chain; much stronger than the later ones.
And they still broke. Adjusting the guide ramp (not tensioner, which was
self adjusting) could prolong the life. When it gets loose and starts to
rattle is when it'll break.

I'm trying to remember whether there was an easily adjustable ramp on the
later ones. Seems to me that the tensioner, which was of a different
design, had more range, but they would still break if not fixed when they
started to make noise. And the results were not pretty.

I'm not sure what the 16 valve engines require. I'll bet that if ignored,
the chains will break and the results will be very undesireable. This may
be the Dealer's simplistic way of dealing with it. On the other hand, I've
known several neglected 8 valve single row motors that didn't make it much
past 100K.

Your milreage may vary.
