Mark,
I have changed the chain and guides (whole shebang) in a 16V 900. IMHO, the guides get pretty chewed up over time, and replacing them probably does a great deal of good for the new chain.
Careful inspection of the chain drive sprocket on the crank is also a very good idea.
The original chain is endless, so I don't know how great I would feel about having a split chain with a master link in there as a replacement.
To do the above extra steps (in addition to chain-only replacement), the timing cover must come off the engine. This is also a great opportunity to change crank seal, oil-pump o-ring and oil-pickup-tube o-ring (back side of timing cover).
On a 9k transverse-mounted engine, it should be easy enough to remove the timing cover with the engine in place. When my 9k timing chain comes due, I will definitely try this method first, before trying to mess special (expensive!) tools for feeding in a replacement split chain. I think someone (from the UK?) who subscribes to TSN (maybe not TSNNOW) has done it this way successfully.
Best regards,
