Subject: Re: BEWARE! SAAB Purchasers

I agree wholeheartedly!!! We have also had bad experiences with my wife's 1991 900s, 75,000 miles, owned from new. Lots of niggling faults that demonstrate that the design and build quality is about a decade behind the Japanese manufacturers. Some of the faults: new cylinder head gasket ($1500 - rip, but fortuantely 1 month within warranty), 3 batteries, new a/c unit, new fuel tank sender, power steering hose, consistently uneven tire wear, new cooling fan, new coolant tank, new freeze plugs, new thermostat, new antenna. Given the steep Saab main dealer serving costs this adds up to a lot of money. When I put it to the Saab service technician that my 1991 Acura Integra, which has required only one non-standard service item (gasket fitted for $35) is a much better built car, he said that Saabs "do not age gracefully" - very honestly and delicately put by someone in the trade. Having said that, we're stuck with the old banger for a while, so can anyone recommend a good Saab Service centre in the San Fernando Valley area of LA. Since we still have to feed the baby, please do not recommend a main dealer.
