But whatever weight for whatever reason, you should still use a major brand such as Valvoline or Castrol. (And personally... again with this personally... I'd stay clear of Quaker State.) Synthetics are fine and do hold their viscosity longer than conventional oils but it should be changed on a frequent basis. I've known people that pour synthetics in the engine block and never change it again. Contaminants will still build up in the synthetic oil. I think what should concern you most is the filter. Always use a superior filter such as Wix or AC/Delco. Wix and AC use metal supports for the paper medium. Most other brands use cardboard. The cardboard supports become saturated quickly and disintegrate and often do nothing at all as the oil will simply bypass the filter altogether. If you're not familiar with Wix, they manufacture a great deal of OEM filters for car companies. In fact, I think Wix used to supply SAAB-Scania before the GM buyout. (I remember when one Mr. Atkinson of SAAB-Scania USA in Connecticut tried to void my warranty because I had a Wix filter on my 89 until I offered to send him a copy of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.) Napa brand and Carquest brand filters are/were Wix. -- - goblin
