Subject: 9-3 vs 9-5

Still deliberating over which of the models to purchase and hope I can get some helpful responses from the experts here. I'm familiar with the differences in options and mechanics and have test driven both cars twice. I found both cars to drive well although the 9-5 seemed to be softer and more comfortable in comparison. The power in the 9-5 is well within what I desire. The 9-3 took more effort on my part, especially in steering (which I figure I can get used to). The hatchback is nice feature of the 9-3 as well it being more toned down in terms of options and less expensive to add. What I would ideally desire is an auto with good performance, safety and reliability and a minimalist set of options. I don't envision keeping my maps at 45 degrees to be very useful for instance :) My main question at this point concerns reliability. Based on most auto writeups and my dealers opinion, the 9-5 is said to be a more dependable and better car. Is this really true? If this is the case it would be a significant factor to me in getting the 9-5, as the extra options beyond leather seats and moon rood don't really interest me. I would pay the extra premium knowing that I've made a sound investment but if the reliability is the same I'd be very happy with the 9-3 instead. Safety. I assume both cars are equal in terms of this but I have nothing to base that on. I'm confused over cost. I get an invoice quote that is about $3,000 over what every invoice quote I can find, be it in books or on line at edmunds and so on. For instance, the 9-5 cost to dealer is quoted including my options at approximately 30,895 base when the dealers I've contacted quote 33,259. With other auto models the listings seem equivalent. This is a significant difference to say the least and I'm wondering if I'm getting taken advantage of or if the sources are extremely outdated. I don't understand such a wide discrepancy and won't purchase until I figure (and accept) this. The same differences exist with the 9-3 too. Thanks for helping.
