my 89 900 does a similar trick. generally if it doesn't start on the first crank i have to hold my foot flat and keep cranking. after several weeks of this it stopped altogether in the middle of a roundabout. the AA man couldn't get it going so it was towed to my mechanic. it had spark and fuel on the side of the road. turned out to be the plugs ! new plugs, started first try. it has done 207,000 kms. when it started up one of the tappets was sticking. the mechanic ran a can of flush through the oil and then changed the oil and the noise stopped. now we can hear a bottom end noise. bugger ! anyone now where to get a reasonably priced rebuild in Queensland Australia ?
