You might also check the a/c relay. The compressor on my 88 9000 stopped working one day and after checking around under the hood for half an hour, I checked the relay (behind the fuse block in the glove compartment on my model). Sure enough, there was some pitting on the contacts. I cleaned them with a file and put it back in and everything works fine again.
