The seat webbing probably gave way - this is a combination of fabric and rubber which hooks to the metal seat frame and is the suspension for the whole thing. You don't need to replace the whole seat, just the webbing. Easy to remove, kind of a pain to put the new one in though. I had the same problem on my '78, and I think the '85 uses the same part, although the seat mounts differently - the replacement take less than an hour, including removing the seat.
