managed to find this one easily in the end. I was expecting an electrical fault, but it turns out some idiot had switched the C and R hoses on the boost solenoid! So when the APC was trying to increase boost all it did was dump it, but when it tried to stop boost all I got was runaway boost instead - nice. Isn't buying cars fun - and even FSH is no help.
