Subject: Re: 89 900 Shifter problems

>I'm kinda new to Saab. My 89 900 5speed has developed a shifter problem >where it is harder to find 1st gear than it should be, and now I can't make >it go into reverse at all. It is not a clutch problem. This car has well >over 200,000 miles on it, so it's "gone through the gears" more than a few >times. The console itself seems to move a little, so that may be the >problem. Of course, to remove the console for inspection, you must remove >the KEY, which means it must BE IN REVERSE which is WHERE I CAN'T GET IT . >Dang. >Any experts or amatuers out there with any helpful input? Thanks. Steve > > Steve, you might want to try this: 1.) Take off the shift gaiter off from the console. 2.) While the car is in neutral, remove the three screws that hold the shift lever in place. Take the lever out. 3.) There is a "hoop" that the lever hooks up with. This hoop moves longitudinally, laterally, and also rotates a bit about the longitudinal axis. Anyhow, what you can do is try to move the "hoop" by hand to place the gearbox into reverse. It'll take a fair amount of force to move it w/o the shift lever, but it can be done. Just remember that you'll be moving it to the left instead of the right as you are below the pivot point. You may have to move the car back or forth in order to get the gears to link up during this. After you get the beast into reverse, your key will be free and you can remove the top of the console. If you need to remove the ignition switch/gearshift housing, you'll prolly find a set of tamper-proof nuts holding it in place. The same thing holds true for the bolts on the bottom of the housing. You'll have to visit the dealer or or some other source in order to find a tool to remove the nuts and bolts. Best of luck, John Rausch 86 900S 87 900S 88 900 SPG 92 900 TC
