I don't envy your dilemma! Beemer 5 wagons cost too much, same for Mercedes, Volvo has a poor recent track record for electronics (IMHO), and Audi is also pricy. Subaru is interesting, and the Passat doesn't have the space the 9/5 has, IMHO. Besides, why option up a $25k Passat when the same dollars can get you an excellent used 9-5? My 99 wagon has a smoothness that my two previous Passat VR6s never had, plus exemplary gas mileage. We test drove an A4 wagon, and I felt like I was back in a Fiat 128, the handling was so twitchy and sensitive. My solution: we bought the 9-5 for her, and I threw over my old Passat VR6 for a matured 325i - now we both like both of our cars. I don't know how demand is for you, but the 5 speed funny Swedish wagon sat on the lot here in Ann Arbor for about three months - the dealer gave me a really good price. Reliability has been quite good, but mainly the car is so nice! Can't you get your wife to fall for the excellent seats, heater/ac, quietness, and smoothness of the 9-5? That was my secret! Also, the seat heaters are toasty.
