The viscosity of 75W90 gear oil is about the same as 10W40 engine oil. Viscosity of 40w engine oil at 100ƒC is 12.5 cst and for 90w gear oil it's 13.5 cst. (50w engine oil is 16.3 cst at 100ƒC ) 10W and 75W are 4.1 nopsamC. The big difference is in the additave package, the gear oil will have and EP additive package, often including molybdenum-disulfide (the stuff in "moly" grease). This privides lubrication under extreme pressure (hence "EP"), it will attack seals, (most wheel and pinion seals are going to FKM (aka, "Viton" TM DuPont) or HNBR as the nitriles aren't up to the task.) I understand that some of these EP additives can attack the bronze in the syncros as well, which is why GL5 lubes are not recommended. They have more additives, and more agressive additives than say a GL4. BTW, very few gears in modern cars are anything but helical cut due to NVH requirements. The helical gears are less efficent and not as strong as a bevel, and add a axial thrust component that has to be taken care of by the bearing, but they do reduce the N in NVH. > "Bob" <uctraingNOSPAMnopsamanet.com> wrote in message > news:f4acoukiieedn758df3gnhf3tjknhreglqnopsamcom... > > On Mon, 16 Sep 2002 00:13:19 -0500 (CDT), markcharlesnopsamv.net > > (MarkC) wrote: > > > > >I can't believe that the manual calls for using just regular 10W30 motor > > >oil.
