I don't think it's the case if you disconnect the battery, I only think the light will come on if battery voltages drops below either 9 or 7volts (can't remember which) when the battery is still connected, like as you say, left the lights on. You will have to get a dealer or someone with the diagnostic tool to clear the codes though.
