Subject: Thinking of buying a '91 900 lpt

I own a '94 9000 CDE 2.0 lpt - now with ECU upgrade, stiffer springs, poly bushes. Oh, and a '91 Nissan Micra. The Micra is my daily ride to work 'cos it's cheap to run (49mpg) and easy to self-service. However, following a minor 'ding' the Micra has to go - it's been fully repaired, but its status has changed from tolerated (for reasons of cost effectiveness) to resented (because, lets face it, it's a cr*p car). My SAAB indy has a '91 900 lpt something. I'm not really sure what it is. It's definately an lpt - i.e. no APC, but it has an intercooler! It also has the Aero body kit - but that may have been fitted at a later date. The car has 180,000+ miles on it, drives well, gearbox seems OK, synchromesh OK, pinion bearings seem quiet in 3rd/5th etc. CV joints quiet too. Clutch pedal motion is good - but needs to go nearly to the floor to disengage - is this normal? No dampness in footwells from leaking heater controls - but cannot adjust heater vents. Headliner is 'grubby' but not sagging. There is a full SAAB history to 140,000 miles, but the history goes a bit quiet after that - a few oil changes at Halfords plus annual MOT certificates. Head gasket was done at around 110,000 - nothing major other than that. There are a few things wrong like the cam-cover leaks, the heater controls don't work properly, drivers electric window doesn't work, drivers seat doesn't move, but these things will be fixed if/before I buy. The asking price is £900 with the above bits fixed, a service and a full year's MOT. How does that sound for a 12 year old car with nearly 200,000 miles on the clock? Its not been looked after too well for the last few years and worst of all (aesthetics only) has been 'keyed' along the whole length on both sides! So, I'd like to go for it, but my wife to one look at the car and stated 'there's no way you're parking something that ugly on the drive'. So I've got to 'persuade' her somehow - any ideas. Also, as I stated, its an lpt - can this be upgraded to fpt with APC etcetera - and what would be involved? TIA AndyH
