You don't say what car it is, but if it's a 4 cyl engine, then a non-turbo is a 4 hour job; a turbo about 6 hours. What does your garage charge per hour? > I declined for now but I expect it won't be long before I regret it. Head gaskets come to us all. What are the symptoms? > Is this something that can be attempted by the home mechanic (me?). Really depends on your level of skill/experience. It's not a great 'first job', but if you've done other stuff (brakes/turbo/suspension/etc.) then it's fairly straightforward. No special tools required. > What book or repair manual would help me the most? Well, depends on the car. A Haynes will provide you with sufficient guidance, as long as you have reasonable skills and a good tool box. -- Grunff
