Subject: headlight frustration

For the second time, I've found the inability to shut off the headlights on my 97 9000 very annoying. This time, we were in a long line of cars driving through a civil war battlefield in the dark. Volunteers had lit a small candle for every one of the 26,000 soldiers killed or wounded in the Antietam, Maryland battle. As you entered the park, you were asked to douse your headlights and I had to respond that I couldn't. Many other cars were in the same situation. Once before, I went to an astronomy meet in a darkened field and blinded everyone as I started my car to drive away, just because I'm considered by some engineer to be too dumb to turn on my own daytime running lights. I'd like to have control over my headlights. Does anyone know how I could do this? Which wire(s) I'd need to interrupt with a switch? Any problems likely to be encountered in doing it? Thanks.
