The most popular lithium ion chemistries are 4.2V fully charged and don't multiply to match with what you'd need as you discovered. It probably would take 60 18650 cells to match the capacity of the lead acid which means lots of fiddly bits. Matched cells off the manufacturing line, tons of connections and monitoring probes... Go look at a hybrid car battery pack teardown and you'll see what is involved to do it right and safely.
Currently shipping retrofit batteries are going to be using LiFePO4 which is a more compatible 3.3V, but still not a 100% match. There is still some internal circuitry involved. I see a 50AH battery is nearly $700.
AGM is a pretty popular choice these days as Nick suggested. Basically the same lead acid chemistry, but an improved design. In pretty much every regard AGM outperforms a flooded battery, but personally I'd still recommend the same CCA or better.
